या कथा संग्रहामध्ये चटकन न समजणारी बरीच रहस्य आहेत.''चौथी खिडकी'' ही एक अफलातून विज्ञान कथा ''काळ'' ह्या संकल्पनेभोवती फिरत राहते. ''पोरखेळ''  ह्या कथेमधून मानवाचे नियतीच्या हातातले भावले असणे हे सूत्र मांडले आहे.कलावंत आणि कला ह्याचं संबंध असलेली एक दर्जेदार कथा पुस्तक वाचत असताना वेगळ्याच कल्पनेच्या खूप दूर असलेल्या जगामध्ये घेऊन जाते.बऱ्याच विषयांच्या खोलात जात असताना त्याची उत्सुकता आणि थ्रील अखेरपर्येंत टिकून राहते.एखाद्या राष्ट्रीय महामार्गावरून जात असताना अचानक वाट चुकून आपण एका माहिती नसलेल्या धसुर वाटेकडे जातो तसे काही कथा वाचत असताना जाणीव होत राहते.सर्व च्या सर्व कथा ह्या वास्तव आणि कल्पना ह्यांच्या सीमेवर सुरु होतात.वाचकांना एखाद्या विषयात गुंतवून ठेवत असताना लेखकांनी बऱ्याच शैल्या वापरल्या आहेत पण हा प्रवास विलक्षण आकर्षक असा असतो जो पूर्ण खोलात घेऊन जातो.कथा वाचत असताना अंगात एक अनामिक अशी लहर जाणवत असल्याची जाणीव होत राहते.सर्व च्या सर्व कथा ह्या सर्व तरुण लेखकांसाठी कादंबरी समान.

पुस्तक परिचय :- मध्यरात्रीचे पडघम;लेखक-रत्नाकर मतकरी

"तुम्ही पाहिलं असेल बघा त्यांना. ते हो... गुळगुळीत टक्कल. अगदी तुळतुळीत काळ्या गोट्यासारखा चेहरा ! पोपटाच्या चोचीसारखं नाक ! आणि डोळे... अगदी रोखून पाहणारे डोळे ! मला तर त्यांच्या डोळ्यांची भीतीच वाटते... ...त्या दिवशी,रात्रीची गोष्ट.मी डॅडींच्या जवळ झोपलो होतो आणि एकदम मला जाग आली. सगळं घर हादरत होतं. झांजा वाजत होत्या. कोणीतरी पडघमवर 'धम धम' वाजवत होतं. त्याच 'धम धम धम' तालात सगळं घर हलत होतं. मग सगळं एकाएकी थांबलं. एक 'गूंऽऽ' असा भुंग्यासारखा आवाज यायला लागला. मग पुन्हा 'धम धम' वाजायला लागलं. मला फारच भीती वाटायला लागली. तेव्हा मी डॅडींना हलवून उठवायला लागलो... आणि एकदम लक्षात आलं: मी कुणाला हलवतोय ? बिछान्यात आहेच कोण ?...''

अशी एखादी कथा वाचत असताना मनात साठलेले गूढ अलगदपणे बाहेर येते.

सदरच्या पुस्तकात सर्व कथा ह्या भीषण...करुण...गूढ...विक्षिप्तपणा...अश्या भावनांनी भरलेल्या आहेत.अवचिन्ह ह्या कथेचा थरार...झोपाळा ह्या कथेमध्ये हळूच अलगद चिमटा काढत वाटणारे भय...मंदा पाटणकरची गोष्ट ह्या कथेमध्ये घाबरून सोडणारा शेवट...फिरून त्याच जागी ह्या कथेमध्ये मानसशास्त्राचा केलेले अभ्यास...सर्वच्या सर्व कथा वाचकांना गुंतवून ठेवून घाबरून सोडतात.सर्वच्या सर्व कथा जबराट आहेत.शब्दांमध्ये ताकद कशी  ह्याचे उत्तम उदहरण म्हणजे सदरच्या पुस्तकाचे लेखकांची इतर पुस्तक आणि कथा.

कथा कशी लिहायची हे जर शिकायचे असेल तर रत्नाकर मतकरी ह्यांच्या पुस्तकांचे पारायण करावे.
